Chapter thirteen

Lucy

“I’m cleaning.” Really, Lucy? That’s the best you could come up with? “And I don’t recall inviting you in, so feel free to see yourself out.” I turn my back on him, hoping he’ll get the hint.

Surprise, surprise, it doesn’t work.

“Fuck that.” He says, storming over to me and grabbing my arm to whirl me around so I’m facing him. “You’re going to tell me right now what has you spooked.”

I shake my head. Spooked? Try fucking terrified.

“It’s time for me to go. I saw some people from the compound in town today. I have to leave, or I’ll be leading them to your doorstep.”

Though the elders never wanted anything to do with the government and said they were basically the devil incarnate, I wouldn’t put it past them to call any of its agencies to make trouble for the club, especially if they knew the Black Roses were hiding me.

“Fuck that. You’re not going anywhere,” he demands, pulling the clothes I’ve already thrown in my bag to the floor. “I’m not scared of a bunch of assholes from a commune.”

Jesus. They’re so much more than that, and he has no idea.

“Listen up, Jude. They aren’t some random religious freaks who spend their days praying and believe in turning the other cheek. They are very much the eye for an eye type, and I refuse to put Charlie or the club in that kind of danger.”

“I appreciate that you want to protect us, but we’re big boys, and I guaran-damn-tee you we’ve handled worse. Stop fucking trying to run when you get scared.”

We’re both breathing hard as the frustration bubbles from us.

“You’re not listening. I’m doing the only thing I can to protect everyone and myself. I can’t stay.”

“I’ll protect you,” he bellows in my face. “When are you going to stop being so fucking stubborn and realize I’m here? For you, goddamnit. I will stand in the line of their fire, or anyone else’s for that matter, if it means keeping you fucking safe!”

His eyes implore me to see his truth, and I’ve never wanted to believe anything so badly in my entire life.

“I’m scared,” I say in a soft voice that’s foreign to my ears. “I’m always scared they’re going to find me, and I’ll be dragged back to that hell.”

Jude cups my cheeks and lowers his forehead to mine. “It’s your turn to listen. That won’t happen. You aren’t going anywhere. Me and the rest of the club won’t let that happen, Lucy.” He gives me a soft kiss on the lips. “Never,” he punctuates with a low growl.

“Kiss me,” I say in a soft, pleading whisper. I need to get these thoughts out of my head, to feel something other than this clawing fear that has the power to bring me to my knees.

Jude looks at me for a moment before moving. I don’t know if he’s gauging where my head is at or deciding if this is the best time for what I know we both desperately want, but when he makes his decision, all hell breaks loose.
